READING STRATEGIES
Reading strategies
It is important to know in which level you are
having this kind of type of reading. For instance, it is not the same at the first
level of primary as in secondary. It is essential to have a progressive level
in reading. When they are too young, reading is not a good idea because they
are still learning to read in their mother tongue language. So, you have to be
careful because children can get confused. So, at the first level vocabulary
and reading vocabulary is the most important. Little by little you can add
sentences to those readings.
When I give a reading to my pupils, we first
look for that important words that children cannot understand and we talk about
them. This is very important. They don´t have to know all of the words, but there
are some which are really important to be able to understand the complete text.
When they are a bit older, it is important also
to guess what is the theme of the text looking at an image, or a headline, or
the title of the text. We talk about the possibilities of the meaning of the
text. So, we train speaking too.
In my opinion, both strategies are efficient
for the reading skills, but it is the level of the students that determine the strategy
which is better for them.
